This PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) is most sensitive in the infrared wavelengths of 8 to 15 microns, where objects, such as human bodies, radiate energy. (Visible energy is @ 0.4 to 0.72 microns, approximately.) This detector generates a voltage when this energy falls on its surface, which is buffered by an N channel FET inside the TO-5 package. Also, this voltage results only from a change of energy, and will output this change only in the range of approximately. 0.24 Hz and 5 Hz. This detector has two sections, poled in opposite polarity, thus energy equally falling on the total surface will produce NO output—and is therefore temperature compensated.
